Is there anything cooler than a vintage caravan?

The retro vaccay is here and hitting the road in a cute-as-a-button retro caravan could just be the chic new way to holiday.

The Covid-19 pandemic has clearly changed the way we live and work, but it has also changed up our holiday trends. Aussies are global explorers, however now, and perhaps for many years to come we have turned our sights to exploring our own back yard and The Tweed is a great place to start!

Maybe it’s our never-ending bank of glorious seaside drives, nostalgia for the days of caravan park holidays or a love of the great open road, but Aussies just can’t get enough of the caravan trend.  Data from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA) identifies that caravan parks are regarded as a safer post-pandemic accommodation option for travellers.  And with massive wait times on new caravans, scoring your own retro caravan could be your best option if you’re keen to hitch up and start exploring sooner rather than later.

Demand for vintage caravans has skyrocketed over the last 12 months, most being snapped up and artfully renovated, ready for picture-perfect, new adventures, within hours of going on the market.  These achingly charming old vans are popping up in in our 7 holiday parks as well as holiday parks across the country, with renovations that leave the sticky-beaks lining up for a look.

Representing freedom, travel, adventure, and minimalism, vintage vans can be picked up quite cheaply, some under $10,000 on Gumtree, but most are in dire need of renovation, refurbishment, and modernisation.

So you’re ready to bring out your creativity, take a step back in time, rekindle the memories of old and take on a great little reno project?  Well before you invest in the hottest camping accessory this summer, here are a couple of things to consider;

  • Take an expert with you to inspect the van
  • Some of these old vans contain asbestoswhich requires a professional remover so avoid these if you can
  • Make sure you have an idea of how you can adapt the van to sleep your family before purchasing and do your research so you know you're paying market value.
  • Always ensure the framework is free from rust and that the wheel bearings are mechanically sound
  • Don’t buy a van unseen — it may have damage you can’t see in photos.

If your not ready to commit to the BIG jobs just yet, but want to escape with major holiday vibes from your busy life right now, you might want to consider buying an already renovated van, or alternatively you can hire one of these epic homes on wheels from the likes of RetroPod Vintage Caravan Hire - Northern NSW

Now that travel is opening up what are you waiting for? Join the #vanlife movement and travel in style in an insta-popular, drool worthy, vintage caravan – staying with us at Tweed Holiday Parks of course!
